What is FGM?

FGM comprises of all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons.

Through analysis, it is evident that most of the girls hail from Northern Tanzania where both safehouses are located. Although proximity has a role to play, the finding is indicative of a broader trend: across Tanzania, about 15% of women and girls have undergone FGM but in the north of the country, FGM is a reality for up to 70% of girls.

Call to Action

Often times, cases of FGM taking place are reported with only hours to spare, necessitating immediate action. Over two billion rural communities around the globe are not indicated on proper maps, including 17 million in Tanzania. Due to the lack of mapping in Tanzania, activities and police struggle to react quickly. Crowd2Map addresses this issue by mobilizing a global team of volunteers who serve as remote mappers, adding roads and buildings from satellite images.

Impact

As the organization marks its 6th year of operations, it’s impact is truly remarkable. Crowd2Map has set up an entire volunteer team and trained over 16,000 online remote mappers. Better maps have helped save over 3000 girls from FGM.
